Lost and found: The Nooth apparatus

John Mervin Nooth, military surgeon, correspondent of Joseph Priestly and Benjamin Franklin, noted inventor scientist has been lost found several times, through his eponymous invention: the Nooth apparatus. A large glass apparatus superficially resembling a Kipp’s gas generator was used originally for carbonating water during “fizzy water” craze in eighteenth century, only to be outdone by one Mr. Schweppes. The would later form part first anaesthetic equipment surgery, some twenty years after ceased made. now part-Nooth / anaesthetiser then, too, forgotten again with advent use nitrous oxide. Dublin City University Science Archive glassware dump 2000 author, subsequently cleaned, restored 2017. It is currently on display, but it also used, slight modification, as undergraduate teaching trainee teachers lesson: “never throw anything away.”
